I thought my epic NKOTB moment had happened back in June 2019 when, while at their concert at the Gahhhden, Joey grabbed my hand for a lift into the audience during a heart-palpitation-inducing rendition of “Tonight.” That was epic, but it was, in fact, topped this past July when my cousins, Lauren and Kerri; my besties, Alana, Cheryl, and Deb; and I went back to the Garden to see the boys after a long 3 years.
About a week or so before the concert, my friend Ashley called to let me know that she had managed to secure a backstage experience with the band before the show. If you’re a regular reader here or if you know me in real life, you’re undoubtedly aware of my deep and abiding love for NKOTB. I’ve been a fan since they were young guys just starting out, and that appreciation has only grown with time. I love their music and, I’m not ashamed to say, I have also grown quite fond of their inclination to show off their amazingly chiseled abs at their shows. Swoon.
So a chance to meet them before the show was an amazing opportunity. Ashely met us in town and came with us to the meet and greet. We all turned into a bunch of giddy schoolgirls as we awaited our allotted time. We were ushered backstage to wait our turn and we really were ridiculous as we watched impatiently before our moment with the band.
I can tell you this: the moment did not disappoint. We approached the step and repeat for our picture and were absolutely taken aback by the generosity of time they afforded us. The official picture was taken and then they granted us the opportunity to speak with them for a few minutes before they were whisked off to get ready for the show. I had gotten my “still I rise” tattoo just the day before, and Jon liked it so much, he asked if he could take a picture of it. You certainly can, Jon. And so he did. And aside from Alana nearly bursting into flames she was so red, and me nearly breaking Donnie’s foot with my wheelchair as I sidled up for the picture, the experience went well, and we then headed off to get some drinks at a restaurant across the street before coming back and experiencing the show of a lifetime. I can’t thank Ashely, Gerard, and Darryl Elliott, of Elliott Physical Therapy, enough for making this happen. It was a truly amazing night.
